Namur Station - 09.034

Author of the complete design of the project

At the heart of the capital of Wallonia, the current bus station is saturated while the overall traffic of the TEC transportation company is going to rise in the coming years. The SNCB train station, located right next to it, has been left unfinished since the end of the 1990s. The public agencies (SNCB and Eurogare, The Walloon region, the TEC transit company and the city of Namur) have the ambition to offer a more secure and pleasant bus station to the public transportation users. Ney & Partners hence designed a new bus station on the roof of the existing train station, which will be upgraded and finished at the same time. Facilitating the connection between rail and road transport, an efficient 'public transportation hub' is created. The busses will access the station on the roof thanks to a new ramp and a bridge that will be integrated in its context. At the start of this ascending road, the Leopold Square will be upgraded to become a more pleasant and urban space.

Specific features

The new bus station consists out of one central platform and two lateral side platforms, used at peak hours. The main hall of the central platform is covered by photovoltaic panels integrated in the glass of the roof. This will completely cover the electrical consumption of the new building thanks to a renewable energy. The access to the bus station on the rooftop of the train station won't be perceived as a ramp nor a bridge. This new infrastructure can be read as a punctuated façade with a horizontal upper end. It forms a plinth along the current 200 meter long parking building. The mast of the cable stayed bridge, through its shape and its position, will acquire the status of landmark and beacon for the new hub. This mast is floating and articulated at its base. The mast's section is triangular and formed by thick metal sheets that are painted in light grey.
